What are BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport®?

The two injectables are neuromodulators, meaning they affect the way your nerves send and receive signals to and from your brain. Every time you smile, laugh, or frown, it’s because your brain sends a message through your nerves to your muscles. Your muscles contract, and your face moves the way your brain told it to.

Over time, though, those repeated facial motions can cause wrinkles to appear and persist. BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® block the nerve signal that causes your muscles to contract. Your brain still sends it, but your muscles don’t receive it. This causes them to relax, and your wrinkles to dissipate.

What can BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® treat?

BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® can effectively treat numerous cosmetic facial conditions, including:

  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Brow lines
  • Laugh lines
  • Lines between the eyebrows
  • Forehead wrinkles

What areas of the face are BOTOX and Dysport effective on?

Dermal fillers are true to their name — they fill in a wrinkle or area of volume loss. The filler is injected beneath the wrinkle, and it fills the depression, pushing the skin back upward. Dermal fillers work on static wrinkles that show themselves at all times. These wrinkles and areas of volume loss usually are found on the lower two thirds of the face.

work on what are known as “dynamic” wrinkles. These are wrinkles that form on the skin when a muscle contracts beneath the area. Dynamic wrinkles form when we make common expressions such as frowning, squinting, and the like. When you frown, you can feel the muscles in your forehead engage. As we age and our skin becomes less elastic, these repeated expressions begin to form wrinkles. This is the upper third of the face, the expressive area.

have no effect on static wrinkles. They work on dynamic wrinkles formed by muscle contractions. BOTOX works on the upper third of the face.

What are the differences between BOTOX®Cosmetic and Dysport®?

BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are made from the same substance and have almost the same effects, but subtle differences could affect the results you get from each option. Dysport® has smaller protein molecules than BOTOX® Cosmetic. That means Dysport® can diffuse over a wider area. The difference is significant in these ways:

  • Dysport® can be more effective at treating larger areas, such as your forehead, whereas BOTOX® Cosmetic can target specific points, such as crow’s feet or lines between your eyebrows.
  • Dysport® may take effect slightly sooner. Most patients see results after one to two days. BOTOX® Cosmetic usually takes three to four days to manifest results. If time is of the essence, you may prefer Dysport®.

Are BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® safe?

They’re both safe. BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are purified forms of Botulinum Toxin Type A, and they’re administered in tiny amounts. They’re also diluted with a saline solution before they’re injected. Both treatments have been FDA-approved for cosmetic use for years — BOTOX® Cosmetic since 2002, and Dysport® since 2009.

While any medical procedure could be unsafe in the hands of an amateur, Dr. Farris is a double-board-certified plastic surgeon with years of experience helping his patients reclaim youthful, vibrant skin. He and his staff will ensure your injectable treatment is as safe and comfortable as possible.

Are BOTOX and Dysport injections painful?

Neuromodulators are injected by our Nurse Practitioner and Certified BOTOX® injector Caffery Gilly. She makes your injections with a very tiny needle, and the injections are not made to great depth. Most patients equate the feeling to that of a pinprick, and they don’t feel the need to have topical numbing cream or anything prior to their injections.

Is there anything I need to do to prepare for my BOTOX or Dysport injections?

No. These are simple, quick sessions. There isn’t anything you need to do to prepare. It only takes about 10-15 minutes for your session, and then you can get right back to work or your other normal activities.

Are there any side effects after having BOTOX or Dysport injections?

BOTOX® (and Dysport® to a much lesser degree) has been injected hundreds of millions of times around the world, and it has proven to be safe, effective, and very low risk. In fact, more and more uses keep being found for its muscle relaxing prowess. In addition to stopping involuntary eyelid spasms and erasing wrinkles, BOTOX® has received FDA approval for treating migraine headaches, for cervical dystonia (neck spasms), strabismus (lazy eye), hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), and even overactive bladder.

The typical side effects after a BOTOX®session are slight redness and possible minimal swelling at the injection sites. Some patients can develop a slight headache for a few hours. These issues typically resolve within a day or so. The one risk with BOTOX® is having it injected into an incorrect muscle, as this can cause issues such as a drooping eyelid. That’s why you have a registered nurse such as Caffery Gilly perform your injections, not someone at a nail salon.

Do BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® have a recovery period?

These non-invasive, non-surgical treatments involve no downtime and no recovery. You can resume your normal activities immediately after your injection. You don’t have to deal with anesthesia, sutures, or stitches.

BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® generally last about three to four months, after which you’ll need another procedure to maintain your results. However, your treatments are cumulative. With each injection, your wrinkles and lines come back less pronounced than before.

How long do results take to show and how long do they last?

Unlike dermal fillers, which immediately push the skin back up, BOTOX® and Dysport® don’t provide immediate results. After you leave our Walnut Hill Lane offices, it takes from three to four days for the botulinum toxin in either product to paralyze the targeted muscle. From there, your results will last from four to six months before the BOTOX® or Dysport® is absorbed by your body and your wrinkles return.

There is some variability in the duration of your results based on the different rates of metabolism in different people. When you notice your crow’s feet and the like beginning to return, you simply make another BOTOX®/Dysport® appointment at Farris Plastic Surgery and you can maintain your results.

Can I combine BOTOX or Dysport injections with other treatments?

Because neuromodulators are so specialized in where they work their magic — on the upper third of the face — they can be combined with other treatments easily. They can be combined with dermal filler injections, such as Juvéderm® or Restylane®, as they work on different areas of the face. So, you could treat your frown lines between your eyebrows with BOTOX® while also having Juvéderm® erase your smile lines.

Kybella injections to reduce your double chin or sclerotherapy to remove some spider veins on your calves would make a perfect complement.

Microneedling could be combined.

It probably wouldn’t make sense to try and add BOTOX® to a surgical procedure, although limited liposuction could work since it involves little recovery.

Really the only thing you would need to be cognizant of would be to avoid the areas you’re having your neuromodulator injections. For instance, you wouldn’t want to have Microneedling done on your forehead after having BOTOX® injected there.

If you’re interested in saving time by combining treatments, let’s talk about it during your consultation.
